The few items where quality changes everything.
- Hiking shoes that fit well Blisters are the #1 reason boys do not summit.
- Wool or synthetic socks Cotton causes blisters. 3 pairs minimum.
- Sleeping bag rated 20-40 F Nights drop to 35 F at Dollar Lake.
- Headlamp + spare batteries Summit day starts in the dark.
Check with leaders before buying any of these.
- Backpack (40-60L) Many families in the ward have one.
- Tent or hammock Share with a buddy.
- Backpacking stove and fuel Ward can sometimes loan one.
- Clothing layers Use what is at home before buying new.
