Gear Strategy

What actually matters

You do not need new gear for everything. Most boys can outfit themselves for about $150 by borrowing, sharing, or checking the DI.

Spend Here

The few items where quality changes everything.

  • Hiking shoes that fit well Blisters are the #1 reason boys do not summit.
  • Wool or synthetic socks Cotton causes blisters. 3 pairs minimum.
  • Sleeping bag rated 20-40 F Nights drop to 35 F at Dollar Lake.
  • Headlamp + spare batteries Summit day starts in the dark.
Borrow or Improvise

Check with leaders before buying any of these.

  • Backpack (40-60L) Many families in the ward have one.
  • Tent or hammock Share with a buddy.
  • Backpacking stove and fuel Ward can sometimes loan one.
  • Clothing layers Use what is at home before buying new.
